Take care citizens when using the Industrial Estate side of the new roundabout on the A96 at the entrance to Sainsbury's. The pressure of vehicles that are going straight over the blockpaving part of the roundabout has had an effect on the drainage and kerbstones in the centre of the roundabout. I saw an engineer looking into the hole the other day.........obviously he's gone away to raise a work order for some sand and cement....
The alignment of the roundabout is such that crossing the red block paved area is sometimes unadvoidable if you are turning right into the supermarket or going straight on towards Forres. The area in question should, in theory at least, have been constructed to take the loadings applied when vehicles pass over it
When I first heard we were getting a roundabout there I thought it might have been something a bit bigger (been round the Golden Mile ones too many times perhaps)It feels that it's just a little small for everything everyone wants to do there but the authorities obviously know best.
This collapse of the paving slabs around the drain has been like this for over a month now. And by the way it is not block paving but a solid concrete surface with a pattern imprinted on it. There should be no problems driving over the patterned part of the roundabout but people seem loathe to do this. The usual bad drivers in this area ALWAYS seem to want to use the outside lane even if they are going straight on towards Forres or turning right (3rd exit) into Sainsburys. Almost as bad as the people who won't enter the yellow boxes (at any price) even though their exit is clear. Another reason for traffic hold ups along the A96 in Nairn !
I forgot to mention in my earlier post that the roundabout in question was reduced in diameter by approx 2 ft, prior to being opened for use. They cut around the outside edge with a Stihl saw, then removed the red blocks & tarmaced over the gap that was left
Perhaps those works undermined the foundations.
Very interesting, thanks for that Gurnites, have a reply in from Transport Scotland - please see update.
Just moved back to Nairn after working in Germany for over 20years which consisted of being involved in traffic management & the construction of roads & after having a good look round the town I find it very disappointing to find the new system now in use which causes tailbacks, how was this ever passed? me thinks Transport Scotland have got it wrong, A good mate suggested that i have a look at the gurn & i must admit its now my daily read & when i noticed the remarks made about the collapse of the paving slabs i felt i must do a bit of investigating & had a wonder up to The Sainsburys roundabout for a look, the work done is not of the highest standard & the materials used should have been of a stronger quality for a very busy A96 plus the the roundabout road is not wide enough for a two lane flow for traffic heading east & for those who wish to turn right heading for Sainsburys, the motorists have a very tight space to manoeuvre & I noticed many were very hesitant on approaching due to the very restricted road space, this is just not good enough yet again Traffic Scotland
It seems we have yet to get roundabouts right. The one at King St has a bad camber that has caught out more than one lorry driver.
The Dalcross roundabout leading to the airport although larger in diameter than the one at Sainsbury's is still too small for articulated lorries, especially if they're turning right
Just before the Golden Mile a filter lane for folk joining the A96 from Culloden was replaced by a roundabout causing huge delays every morning. Road markings could resolve this but have yet to be put in place, although one west bound lane has been closed
Nairn got through two world wars without German will being imposed on us. Nairn doesn't need German roads, Nairn needs roads suitable for Nairn and Nairn alone.
I hope Inverness doesn't interfere here also. They have their own road problems, and we don't want those spread to Nairn as well.
Nairn roads for Nairnites!
now, now, anon. If the nice Germans wanted to build a fancy Autobhan round Nairn then I think most folk would say yes.
It might happen you know, after all the German taxpayers are already contributing billions every month to keep Greece going so perhaps someone in the EU could slip Nairn in there too? The Germans wouldn't notice another few million Euros going astray.
To have the Greeks take credit for two glorious beaches at Nairn in order that the Germans can invade and dig up the roads. No way I say.
We don't need German Autobahns with unrestricted speed limits in and around Nairn. We have enough problems with Sainsbury's traffic lights in Nairn, without hundreds of BMWs driving at horrific speeds.
Can i through the courtesy of the gurn reply to Anonymous who made a statement in reference to the comment I made regarding my working in Germany to put the record straight I am from Nairn born in The Town & County Hospital, went to The Links & Millbank School then to Nairn Academy who just wants a good traffic system for the town which it clearly is lacking.
Don't worry anon, the other anon was just on an early morning satirical expedition I reckon
I just thought he/she was being round about in their comments!
In a round about way a red / yellow / green traffic light system is just what Nairn needs.
Thanks to Sainsburys, there are now far more traffic lights in Nairn than is welcome. Interesting thoughts on German built autobahn to go around Nairn.
