River CC back tweaked bus station design (in principle)

Strong support this evening at the River Community Council meeting for the latest design from the developer's representative. There were some reservations concerning colours etc but mindful that there could be more "tweaks" in the pipeline yet after further discussions between the developer and the Highland Council, River CC were minded to back the development in principle. The vote was unanimous. (The artist's impression above will enlarge)

As pointed out by one of our regulars - the date of the 60's night is this Saturday 12/11/11 and not 12/11/12 :-)

Tall and modern and in Nairn

This building situated in the Firhall housing scheme is four storeys high and is bordered with mature trees at the side and rear. Obviously it is quite adequate accommodation for the inhabitants. What would happen if plans for similar came in for a town centre location however,would it receive the ceremonial two-fingers from the statutory consultees? Just a thought.

Meanwhile River CC tonight will discuss the amended proposals for the bus station site over at the Community Centre.

More sunshine in prospect

A fantastic start to the day and not the levels of frost in the town today either. Here's hoping too that Aileen and Ruaridh are reunited today.

UPDATE: Bratach sees red down at the Harbour tonight!

One wonders...

...how the building pictured below might have been received by West Community Council and NICE if the planning application were to arrive on the Glenurquahart Rd mat today. We live in a time where planning issues are to the fore and a tall building proposed for the bus station has had a knock back from the two groups mentioned above. In an age where there is no shortage of self-appointed arbiters of architectural good taste in Nairn (witness Nairnbairn's carbuncle nomination) perhaps it is worth reflecting on another tall building in the town: 12 years on and the Marine Road apartments are very much part of the landscape.

Ardclach - The Bell Tower - "confinement of moral delinquents"

Billy was up at Ardclach today and sent in this picture. It might have done as an illustration for this Gurn post but perhaps it is another opportunity to dip into the writings of Robert Thomson:

"Strange as it may appear, the Bell Tower does not stand on Church land at all. There is no authority, so far as we can learn, by which a Presbytery or heritors were ever empowered to erect such buildings, and even if they had, it is evident that they could only have done so on their own property. Accordingly it is supposed to have been originally used as an estate prison, and that the Laird of Lethen, who was the patron of Ardclach, and a staunch Covenanter, allowed the Kirk Session to use the building, from time to time, when it was not otherwise required, first as a place of confinement for the moral delinquents in connexion with the congregation, and thereafter as a " bell house," on account of its proximity and situation."
