A question from the time Donnie Munro used to come to Nairn on his holidays

A fantastic concert tonight at the Community Centre in aid of  the charity Mary’s Meals.  Top of the bill was celtic rocker Donnie Munro. Whilst introducing one of the songs he told of the days when his family would come through to Nairn for the day whilst enjoying their annual holiday to Inverness.

Donnie asked if anyone could remember a restaurant in Nairn with a mosaic floor with what seemed to him to be like a big star in the middle. He would like to be informed if this was the case or if it was simply a figment of his imagination. Nobody in the capacity audience was able to help him, is there anyone in Gurnshire with thoughts on that?

Only places I can think of with the Mosaic floor and stairs was the Highland Hotel when it had the restaurant open upstairs.

Was there not a star on the floor of Yaks on the High Street. Most definetly a stop off on a summers day for his wonderful ice cream.

Could it possibly be Morgantis cafe that had a shop at the front that sold sweets, fags, newspapers, etc etc & a place through the back where you could sit down for a coffee, I remember my Mam taking me there & ordering for me an American Cream Soda Lemonade with 2 scoops of ice cream which came in a tall glass, I was in heaven I can still remember the taste to this day & even what was playing on the juke box "Tobacco Road" by The Nashville Teens, year 1964, the place is now where the Cantonese Restaurant on the Brae is situated.

Wasn't Morganti's on the High Street (with the star on the floor, cigs and sweets out fromt, and the coffee shop out back), and Ballsanellie(?) on the Brae?

  8. It was Juliano's on the brae, it had a blue and white mosaic on the floor as you went in, the seating area was up 5 or 6 steps at the back.

Morganti 's was the 60's. Guliano's was later. So depends how old Donnie is. But the shop was on the brae whatever age he was. One of Nairn 's best shops along with Rosé Brothers and Heards.
Ashers at the corner was another lovely shop.
Where did our high street go?
