Too big to fail - Councillor hits out at horse poo

Dog poo, seagulls and pigeons featured up at Nairn Academy on Tuesday night as the regular topics were debated once again at the meetings of the Westies and the Subbies. Councillor Michael Green made an intervention that took the debate done a slightly unfamiliar track however, he said:

“I was walking up the river with my wife and our dog and we addressed what had to be addressed on our behalf. And all of a sudden I was confronted appeared to be an ant hill full of horse manure. It’s like the banks they are too big to fail. Well we can beat up on the dogs and make the dog owners address it but what about the horse owners who are leaving these great big massive piles of you know what in various prominent locations.”

Chair of the Westies Rosemary Young was quick to respond: “Where are they, I must go and get some for the roses.

“Round the riverside, you know where it is,” replied Michael.

“I haven’t had a walk down there for ages. Yes I’d go down there with a bag and pick it up. She added a little later. “The only thing I would say Michael is that dog mess, it’s got meat in it while horse manure is grass, it doesn’t carry, although they do have salmonella.”

Michael returned to the main debate and said: “I think the important thing is that we will hopefully in the not too distant future have a forum whereby we can get the solutions and have a body to take it forward to address the gull issue once and for all, whether it is education to stop kids, whoever feeds them, right through to more aggressive methods.

What's Rosemary going to do with her bag of horse manure, eat it? She sounds very positive about it

Re;the question of seagulls,I visited Worthing recently, someone came up with the idea of just allowing people to feed gulls on a small part of the beach,A viewing hut was placed on the seafront for twitchers. Its been very successful.

After slidegate looks like we've slid into poogate

Still, as long as you hire Rosemary to follow your horse with her bag everything should be okay and will be coming up smelling of roses rather than rosemary

I like Michael Green but I've always thought that some of his ideas have been a bit too dung-ho for my taste.

Isn't there a song with the line 'horse poos where my Rosemary goes'?

I wonder if this is how Mr Green addresses those great hills of horses d'ouvres when he meets them?

Fair fa' your honest, softy faced,
    Great mountain o the equine'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
    Gress, hay, or oats:
Weel are ye worthy o' a grace
    As lang's my arm.

I'm really surprised that horse poo wasn't mentioned on the leaders debate last night, they seemed to touch on many other important subjects

I hope the ants in the hills don't become a problem

If the hills become too big maybe we'll have some new Munro's to climb?

Maybe the dog patrol van will be joined by a horse patrol van on the links?

12.55 dogs and horses have been raised / worked together for hundreds of years,(take fox hunting,as awful as it was) Known as the sport of kings. There's always dogs around stables too. It's up to responsible animal owners to make sure all animals have their jags etc then no problem!

anon@6.19 surely it should be up to all responsible horse owners to clear up after their beasts? I remember the day's when everyone just let their dogs sh*t anywhere and nobody cleaned it up, so perhaps it's time that horse owners had to follow suit?

anon@6:19: Moot comment. We are talking about antibiotics that horses are given that can do serious damage to dogs. Probably 'hundreds of years ago' there were no modern drugs. Like comment below you, maybe it's about time that horse owners were also held accountable to clearing up, after all they use public rights of way, which means the public using them. Also perhaps with the same shovel, they could fill in the erosion created by horses in such site as SSSIs.
