Ceilidhs start again next Thursday night - everyone welcome
Next week the Nairn Ceilidh Group gets another summer season under way and an appeal to locals to turn up in larger numbers is being made.
The group have been great ambassadors for the tourist industry and at the same time providing great family entertainment to scores of people every Thursday 7.30pm at the Royal British Legion’s Highland Hall.
Tables can be reserved for group bookings by calling 01667 453270 (evenings).
“We can’t believe another season is upon us already,” said Chairman Donald Wilson.
“Last year we disbursed £2,350 to local charities and deserving causes.
“At the height of the summer we are often playing to near packed houses but in the early weeks of June and July it would be great to get more local people filling up some of the empty seats and that will mean more money going to local organisations and worthy causes.
“The key purpose of the group is to provide live traditional Scottish entertainment for visitors and locals and we get great feedback from people who attend and enjoy their evenings spent with us.
“Last year we had a German Pipe Band who turned up unexpectedly and they brought the house down.
“Members of the group have been busy rehearsing over the winter learning new material.
“We are also looking forward to the return this year of the Firthsiders and Dave Godden who performed last year with us for the first time.
“Colin Ross has also been booked along with several top class ceilidh bands so the dance floor will be very busy.”
The legion hall has been refurbished and anyone wishing to attend can just pay at the door. Ticket prices have gone up to £3 from £2.50 but kids are half price and young families are very welcome.
Beneficiaries in 2012 were: Royal British Legion Nairn Branch (£700), Nairn St. Ninian FC (£300), Crossroads Care, Feis Inbhir Narainn, Nairn Academy Special Needs Base, Nairn County Under 15 Team (£200 each), Nairn Highland Games (£150), Highland AD/HD Support Group, Highland TAG, Rosebank Brownies, Sandown Community Garden (£100 each). A total of £2,350.

More manhole cover problems on the A96 in Nairn
Work is progressing now on the problem at the Rosebank Church hall that we highlighted yesterday but there are still several cones to negotiate on this busy junction that includes traffic lights. On that thread one of our readers commented on manholes at the Tradespark Road Junction and at the roundabout junction with St Ninian Road. The first image is of a seemingly broken man hole cover at the A96 roundabout and the second of a cover near the junction with Tradespark Road. Also you still don't have to go far to find potholes on the A96 in Nairn, here's one on the roundabot in this image here.

A pier state of repair
A good sunset tonight viewed from the end of the west pier (image here). Across the steps at the end of the west pier ieces of yellow and black tape are in place to prevent the unwary from injuring themselves on a broken metal hand rail.
Concerns were raised recently at the joint Community Council meeting about the state of the surface on the east pier - image below. Time and tide have been unkind there too, could we be reaching a point soon where the east pier will be declared unsafe?
Manhole cover hazard on the A96 outside Rosebank Church Hall
The scene this evening outside the Rosebank Church Hall. A very busy set of traffic lights nearby too. Obviously the road surface through Nairn is suffering under the increasing amount of through traffic, particularly HGVs. Another picture here.
Riverside - Murd is still gurning about long grass on the edge of the paths
Our riverside correspondent Murd has filed another picture. He states: "One of the coments made abut the grass cutting was that the riverside is a semi-wild area and not a garden. Is it wild enought now? We pay to have them cut so lets have them cut please!"

Nairn Patients Group Progress
Simon Noble told the Gurn:
"We've set up two of our five working groups so far: one is looking at transport issues for patients of the practice. If you'd like to tell us of your experiences - either here or elsewhere - or if you are involved in providing local community or voluntary transport arrangements, please DO get in touch."
