Conor Gethins receives his Highland League player of the year award - picture

Last Saturday night at the Newton Hotel the great and the good of the Scottish Football Highland League assembled in Nairn's Newton Hotel for the annual awards ceremony.
Nairn County's striker Conor Gethins was the League's Player of the year, the top goal scorer and also Clubman of the year. Pictures of Conor receiving the award from Damien Bates, editor of the Press and Journal below - images from Donald Matheson.

Yorkhill Children's Foundation provides enhanced medical equipment and resources which benefit sick children and babies who are treated at Yorkhill Hospital and within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. These can include innovative medical equipment, improvements in child and family facilities and paediatric research and training.

CLIC Sargent - Caring for Children and Young people with Cancer

Every day ten families in UK are given the devastating news that their child has cancer. CLIC Sargent is the only charity offering them care and support every step of the way, both emotionally and practically, in a very unobtrusive, but essential way.

At the moment, because of funding, they can only help three out of every four of these families. In the Highlands there is a CLIC Sargent professional at Raigmore and a paediatric oncology nurse. Although these services are based locally the majority of children have to be treated in Glasgow or Edinburgh for weeks, months or longer.

CLIC Sargent provides self-catering accommodation for families at a wonderful purpose built home situated 2 minutes from the hospital. They also have a lovely purpose built holiday house in Prestwick, enabling these families some time away from the hospital situation families."

Cleaning up the old Social Work buildings - NICE direct action!

NICE have great ambitions for the old Social Work buildings. Read more about that in this previous article. There's still a long way to go before anything happens though but some NICE activists have been busy cleaning the building up over the weekend . It is often mentioned how this prominent building is visible to thousands of people passing through Nairn every day and thus important that it is properly cared for.  

Here's a picture we received earlier today. Rosemary Young told the Gurn:

"We cleaned the gutters out on the social building  - hope we don't get locked up but quite appropriate as the cells are just the other side of the door in the picture."

Well down Rosemary and her NICE team! Maybe this sort of activity could catch on during summer weekends?

Murd calls for more regular cutting on the riverside paths

The Riverside Paths are one of Nairn's natural assets for both visitors and locals alike. Our riverside correspondent Murd Dunbar reports that there is now a despertate need for the path verges to be trimmed. These images from Murd clearly show a seat disappearing under rampant Sweet Cicely. When plant material gets this high close to the path it then starts to overhang during wet spells, hampering progress on the paths.

Gurnites will recall that questions were asked about an ealier, seemingly unnecessary cut this year.  Time for the contractors to get back round the river or for the job to be returned to local control? 

County fans rock on again

Last weekend the Fans Ground Improvements Fund rocked in Castle Square on the High Street. Last night the music went indoors to the Community Centre for a sell-out Music Showcase. Pictures of last night available on Kenny Macleod's flickr pages. Below you can see a number for Furry Vengeance's set. Also performing were Jemma Tweedie, Hollie Atkinson, Josephine Sillars and Emma Mitchell. A fantastic night's entertainment in the Community Centre which is proving itself to be a great venue for live music. Great raffle prizes donated by local businesses too. More details will appear on the fans funding website in due course.

Nairn County's Conor Gethins is Highland League player of the year!

There have been many magic moments witnessed by the County faithful this year and among them countless displays of talent and sheer wizardry by Conor Gethins who scored forty goals this season. He was named as the Press and Journal Highland League player of the year in a ceremony at the Newton Hotel last night. Conor is reported as saying that he was really honoured to get the award, the choice of all Highland League players. He thanked his team mates, especially Robbie Duncanson.

Well done Conor and thanks for the entertainment you have provided over the season 2012/13.
