Demolish the old Social Work buildings?

We have commented before about how the efforts of NICE and their relationship with the Highland Council etc, can seem somewhat esoteric to a lot of people. The future of the town centre isn’t high on a lot of folks priorities anymore, it is something going on in the background again and this observer suspects that even many of the 1050 that have so far signed on the dotted line with NICE will not feel directly involved. 

If, however, you want a quick refresher course then Iain Bain offers his usual enlightened analysis in this week’s Nairnshire Telegraph. It is worth spending the five minutes or so that it will take to digest his few paragraphs on page 10 of this week’s edition. It’s good stuff but does the venerable custodian of the Leopold Street Thunder risk being labelled a heretic by the NICE folk in the light of the following suggestion:

“Another solution might be to preserve public toilets which a town centre requires, raze the bulk of the buildings and incorporate them into the carparking that central Nairn really needs.”

Nairn Camera Club Calendar

The Gurn hears from the Nairn Camera Club that they are trying to raise funds for education and equipment

and as part of this venture they have produced thier own Nairnshire calendar for 2014 and  are selling them via several outlets on the High Street and via their web pages. There are two designs one is A4 the other is a C5 slim kitchen style calendar they sell at £4.99 for the slim and £6.99 for the A4 orders placed via the internet on the clubs web site can be delivered worldwide but will incur delivery costs which are automatically calculated at the end of the transaction.

Nairn rooftop trees and shrubs - No 1 the Rowan.

Many fine specimens survived the warm weather and are now thriving after a drop of rain. Here is a Rowan that seems to be enjoying life at a high altitude and looks to be 3-4 ft high.

Work starts at the Bus Station Garage

Almost one third of the roof is off and seagulls and pigeons are still sticking as far as possible to their favourite perches but quite a few creatures will soon be looking for a new home. 

NICE AGM minutes - worth paying attention?

A bit of Gurnmeister opinion.

Mabye a few Gurnites wonder what all this NICE stuff is all about and might not look beyond the headlines. Well it all came out of the desire of many people in this town to have more say in their own affairs and stop the relentless centralisation of power that has been rolling on for at least the last 20 years. Now NICE isn't everyone's cup of tea but it is worth paying attention. There can be few that will disagree with the central tenets around which the high heid yins and the rank and file of that organisation base themselves - that is to say to do the best for the common good of Nairn. Of course the danger for NICE and those who are not members but of a similar mind is that we all get into terrible stushies on the way from A to B and end up in a pythonesque mess without achieving anything for the town. "The Council recognises the misery gulls can cause, especially throughout the nesting season"

A new press release from the Highland Council outlines the current approach which seems to be to make information available:

"There is no easy answer to the problem however, gulls are very opportunistic scavengers and will take advantage of any food scraps that we humans leave lying around from take-aways or overflowing bins. What is still worse is when people deliberately feed them, whether in the street, parks or in their gardens so we are in the process of putting notices on all our public litter bins in appropriate locations requesting people not to feed gulls."
