At least 1500 plus Inverness, Nairn and Badenoch voters want another Euro Referendum

A UK wide petition for another referendum now has more than two million signatures. One of our regular readers, Brian, sent us a link. The petition states:

"We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum."

A bit hopeful perhaps and remember a Scottish Devolution referendum in 1979 was front loaded with an amendment:

"An amendment to the Act stipulated that it would be repealed if fewer than 40% of the total electorate voted Yes in the referendum. The result was that 51.6% supported the proposal, but with a turnout of 64%, this represented only 32.9% of the registered electorate. The Act was subsequently repealed." More on Wikipedia here.

Hard to see how you can go back and change the rules retrospectively in a democracy. It was done beforehand in 79 and even that left a bad taste in its wake.

Anyway there is a map linked from the petition page that shows that there are plenty of people signing in Scotland with over 1500 in our parliamentary constituency and over a 1,000 in Moray where the result was very close. The situation is moving very fast and who knows what will happen tomorrow let alone Monday or in a fortnight's time, all sorts coming out of the Euroref Pandora's box now.

The baw's burst on a second referendum in the next few years - it's time to stop whinging and get on with the job of prosperity in a free market place. Small industries and Scottish fishermen are well placed to reap the rewards of the Brexit vote.

Good to see sensible people commenting instead of cries of "xenophobia" etc...We need to get this period of uncertainty out of the way and then we'll start seeing the rewards. The remain voters need to calm down and accept that sometimes things don't go your way. We now have an opportunity to shape the country's future and it's arguably the greatest such opportunity in a generation or two. We can continue with the divisive politics and blaming immigrants, the elderly, those on benefits or bankers depending on your political penchants or we can try to work together towards a better future for the entire country.

Let's make sure that values and ideas we stand for are part of the UK's future whether they are European, British or both. Let's pick ourselves up and work positively on preserving the integrity of the country and make difficult decisions as they can't be any tougher than the one we've just made.

Thanks goodness Scotland has Nicola looking out for us. I've always voted conservative in the past. But to find out that they are now turning into Moseleyite Fascists, I really wish I'd voted yes a couple of years ago.

Sounds familiar all this. People who won't accept a democratic decision wanting referendums to be re-run. Not going to happen. We have had enough of referendums and the division that the process of having them creates. Let's just get on with our lives and be the best that we can.

Anoy@10:15: What have the Conservatives got to do with the result of this referendum, if i'm right in the heed, the vast majority of the conservative party were opposed to leaving...doh!

There will never be another inde ref because we would have to have the euro...once the EU knows how much Scotland wants back they would ensure that we abide by their wishes.....no one would want the euro...my thoughts are there will be no eu soon anyway. So nothing to worry about there folks.

I hope all the No voters in the Scottish independence election are sat happy looking at the result of the EU referendum vote. The Highlands will stand to lose over £100M from the EU. Still, I'm sure Westminster will match that money as the UK dips into a a negative financial spiral

Boris for PM and Trump as President, we get what we vote for

Know for a fact anon that Eurodosh paid for the Sandown Allotments extensions and also the Mill Road plots. How was such an awful thing allowed to happen - bastards, how could they do such a horrible thing to Nairn?

If Euro money paid for all these things and more, was it not once UK money sent to Europe in the first place ? It is a bit like giving your neighbour money then asking for some of said money isn't it. We have all heard the story of"it's euro/government money there to be used". Guess what, it came out of someone's hard earned wages . Can't believe that "nobody" apart from the SNP had a plan A, B or C, useless shower. Another referendum ? Grow up and deal with democracy in its simplest form.

Democracy was born out of conflict. Expect plenty more referendums/ elections. It's a shame some folk don't understand or even comprehend as to what the EU really meant. I dread what the next few years will bring but as long as Scotland is in the UK we can only blame ourselves or at least some of ourselves!

On Thursday England (and some of Wales)voted Scotland out of Europe. Tonight England played themselves out of Europe. Good on Island!!

Please, please no more referendums. It is a well known fact that they never settled anything as the results are never accepted as final.

The UK sends around 16bn a year to the EU, we get around 6bn back in rebates, funding and subsidies, that means we send 10bn net that gets spend else where in Europe and not in the UK and we get that fraction back only on the grounds that we spend it on what they tell us to spend it on.

The reason the remain have such a problem with losing this is that the Tories are less likely to spend that money on things they personally want.

That's right, they'd rather have a smaller pamirtion dictated to them than have the democratically elected party decide on it, simply because the party in power at the moment is one they don't like.

The fact that the party will inevitably change in the future hasn't even occurred to them.

I've waited all of my life for this vote! I voted leave...for many reasons, too many to write here. Mainly because I'm NOT European, I will never be European, I'm British. I'm tired of Brussels jobsworths that have never set foot in my country telling me what i can and can't do. How many fish our fishermen can catch in our own waters, that I cant buy a straight banana, that I cant buy a 100 watt light bulb, I cant buy a powerful vacuum cleaner....the sheer stupidity goes on and on! Giving millions bailing out other countries while there are British people born and bred here who have fought for their country living on the streets. Hard working British families who cant afford a home of their own, having to rely on food banks...all in this tiny Island...the worlds FIFTH richest economy.

I've just mugged a "remain" supporter - I took £350 out of his wallet but he didn't seem to mind.

I felt a bit sorry for him so i decided to give him half of it back, but only on the condition that he spends it on things i say he can and that everything he buys should have a picture next to it of me saying i'd paid for it. He agreed!

We are meeting again tomorrow to do the same thing. He said that it was a fantastic idea and that he wouldn't be able to survive without me.

Well done to those that voted for us to leave the EU

'Global stock markets have suffered their biggest two-day rout ever, thanks to Britain’s shock decision to vote to leave the EU.

Yesterday, $930bn was wiped off the world’s stock markets, in a fresh bout of selling. That followed the rout on Friday, which destroyed $2.03 trillion of value'.

this now seems a little like the Catch22 film or the song 'round like a circle, like a wheel within a wheel'. Another referendum proposed. What I would be interested in (rather than the arguments for and against), is who pays for the referendum/ Where does the money come from to fund it? It MUST surely cost an absolute fortune to pay for setting it up, the paperwork, the policing of the polling stations, the people who count the votes, the posters and so on. If any one can point me in the direction as to how I can find this out, I would much appreciate it. tia.

As A S.N.P supporter I voted for independence thinking we would be free to make our own decisions as how Scotland would be run. Knowing we would have to leave or be put out of the E.U. but still held the referendum. Because we wanted to run our own country and not be dictated to by others.
HOW WRONG CAN ONE BE.
Scotland has Nicola who wants us to be part of the E.U. with all that involves.?
Yes they may have paid for some plots for gardeners
But neither the S.N.P or the E.U. have done anything to help me about Human-Rights.
Some thing they profess to be concerned about for others but not for the disabled as far as access to A right of way is concerned and provide A ramp for them at the Firhall Bridge Nairn.
Some thing that would of cost much less than the plots. That may of been the problem it could of been achieved at little expense.
And that brings to mind the expression.
I AM ALL RIGHT JACK .

Well said N Little, that is how myself and many of my friends feel, now if someone who disagrees with that gets upset, they should remember that there were more of us agreeing with this statement than NOT. We are still part of the U.K. Because we also held a vote on that too which meant more of us wanted to stay in the UK than NOT. Now I'm sure there will be many people irritated at this fact but I'm afraid that's how a democracy works. After watching the Euro head bummers in action tonight on the tv, I'm even more glad the way I voted, booing and jeering ...really. Looked like bairns who have just been told they won't have as much pocket money to spend....for the rest of their lives. Democracy and Freedom should always be respected, no matter how you disagree with someone's viewpoint.

I was left very proud at the way Europeans across all parties and across all Nations gave a standing ovation to one of our Scottish MEPs earlier today.
Democracy in Scotland does not rest at Westminster. It rests with the people who live here. They have the sovereign will - and if they express it - then their will prevails.
No matter what Farage or Boris espouse.
That is democracy.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 8:24

How proud were you that our Scottish MEP was actually begging the rest of Europe to let us stay?

Anonymous said...

Very.

Anonymous said...

All I saw was a Scottish MEP pleading not to be thrown off the Gravy Train because he would have to rejoin the real world and get a job!

Anonymous said...

I actually watched this live on TV. Alyn Smith's contribution made me cringe. A Scot begging the EU for favours literally beggars belief. He also confirmed that he was speaking for the SNP rather than Scotland when he ignored the 38% of Scots who voted to Leave in favour of "bits of Wales" that had voted to Remain.

Let's just say that some way Scotland was allowed to get back into the Eu. Where will they get the vast amount of money they need to pay for membership, remember you only get a small portion of that back. And they will want us to take the euro, no way will SNP get a majority vote for independence with these problems.

The amount of money is directly related to the wealth of the country.
Are you suggesting that we are one of the richest countries?
Who would stop us using the pound?
There are whole series of pre-conditions prior to any need to consider joining the Euro anyway. (By that time, Westminster may be using a barter system.)
Some older folk might well have been scared by Project Fear in 2014.
I think the "Great British Well of Myths and Fables to scare the Jocks" might just be running dry!

Anon 5.34...you are British, you live in the United Kingdom. You may be Scottish first but you are still British. It's saddening the way people on this Isle dont see themselves as British which is different to English. A lot of 'Jocks' as you put it, fought and still serve in her HM Forces which is British and I can safely say all of them consider themselves Scots and Brits, so your basically putting them all in a different nationality as yourself!

In the run up to the Scottish referendum we were told that if we wanted to remain in the EU we must vote 'No'. Yet another hollow promise. I wonder as to how people who did vote against Scottish independence feel now?

The vote to leave the EU has placed the whole of the UK and indeed the EU in a state on instability. We might not be at war with anyone (yet) but the shockwaves from this decision are likely to reverberate around the world for decades

We also have the spectre of Boris Johnson being our next PM. He's a showman rather than a pragmatic politician and will further our downfall

With the Tories in disarray and Labour splitting itself into factions England and Wales face the loss of credibility for the two parties who've enjoyed decades of being in power. Within that political vacuum I can see Ukip sweeping the board in the next general election that by all accounts might be just 6 months away (this to try and stabilise the country)

Post the EU referendum we've seen dreadful racist attacks. We're facing a future that will be dominated in Westminster by very right wing politics. No matter what folk say about us being British or indeed European Scotland will in effect become a separate island as we try and defend ourselves from what will no doubt be a very unsympathetic Westminster government.

The loss of EU monies will further distance Scotland as we see many more services disappear and this is on top of those already planned under the Tories austerity measures

I can only see one route for Scotland and the SNP, that of becoming independent but no doubt others will be able to proffer a solution to all this

They know their history too and know that it was "No great mischief if they fall."

"I'm constitutionally incapable of it. There's a special extra quality you need that is indefinable, and I know I don't have it. There's an equanimity, an impermeability and a courage that you need. There are some things in life you know it's better not to try"

This has been a interesting debate on here. I would like to make one point however. Before oor Nicola gets too excited I, and many others no doubt, voted for the UK to remain in the EU. I did not vote that in the event of the UK leaving I wanted Scotland to remain. That was not on the ballot paper.
