Nairn scaffies first for the pay-offs

Nairn is taking another hit ahead of the big city 16 miles to the West. The Inverness Courier states:

"Workers in Nairn will be affected first, receiving their notices as early as July. Further redundancies will follow in Inverness in January 2012."

The cuts are unavoidable we are told but why is it always Nairn that seems to get the first kick in the teeth? The whole situation with the cutbacks in refuse collections now seems to be clouded in confusion as the size of the pay-offs and the amount of money that might be saved is under question. Here's more from the Courier:

"At the time it was unclear exactly how many jobs would be axed nor was it known how much money the authority would save, with Colin Clark, head of waste management, admitting the identified £500,000 saving was simply his "best guess".

Four months on budget leader Councillor David Alston admits there is still no confirmed figure but warns that if the £500,000 target is not met other services will face cuts."

It doesn't matter how many people the HC try and sack - the council is losing money through bad management, not through employing too many frontline staff.

I know big private companies have been cutting back on middle and senior management, because this is where the real cost savings are. When is the HC going to do this?

To answer Brian, a lot of the middle and senior management create their own Kingdoms. So that the people below them always gets the sack first before them.

According to SNP councillor John Finnie over 900 people on Highland Council earn over £40,000 per year:

'Councillor John Finnie led the SNP Group on Highland Council’s opposition to the Lib Dem lead Administration’s ill-conceived and arbitrary cuts.
The SNP Group recognises that the UK Government removing £814m from the Scottish settlement means there is a need for economies, however, we will not be party to attacks on front-line services, especially when Highland Council employees nearly 900 folk who earn more than £40,000 per annum!"
