Danny gets out there

The first official day of the General Election campaign and Danny was in Nairn. It's going to be a tough fight for the Lib Dem candidate though - here's what the bookies think of his chances. Is it all done and dusted? Only one poll that matters though and that's on May 7th.

Comments on General Election candidates' record and policies are welcome but those on physical appearances are not.

I was very impressed with Danny when he came round. He really listened to what we had to say.Where as all we've had from SNP is enough junk mail to fill a pedal bin.

Through Danny's combined work with the Tories it's likely that our museum will close. There to have a first and last look was he?

Who knows whether Danny will hang on in Nairn but the issue for Scotland's voters rather than Nairn's is that the collapse of the Labour vote in Scotland is quite likely to lead to another Conservative UK government.

Labour won in Scotland last time and what did we end up with?

@Anon 10.01

After the last general election Scotland ended up with 1 Tory MP, 2 pandas and a share of the £1.5T debt (better together)

A future Labour or Tory government will carry on with austerity, there is little difference between them these days

I'm an ex lifelong Labour supporter who will be voting SNP. I cannot wait for Scotland to go it alone and leave Westminster as a distant bad memory. It's only a matter of time before we gain independence

The answer 10:01 is that Scotland ended up with the same as the rest of the UK. A Tory/Lib Dem coalition. The nightmare scenario is that the chance of ousting the Tories this time round may be thrown away if Scotland withdraws its support for the only party that can replace the Tories in Government. What's the point in returning returning loads of SNP MPs to Westminster that the Tories will simply ignore?

The problem is 10:46 that if the next government is Tory it won't pass legislation to allow for another refendum, because we have only just had one.

Blue Tory, Red Tory or Danny Tory? The differences are marginal. There are however other ways - less austere. Vote for Drew - Vote SNP. Labour have had a "feeble 50" for decades. Did the feeble 50 save Invergordon? Or Linwood? Or Ravenscraig? The answer is "NO". Are most of the feeble 50 now in the House of Lords on 300 quid a day tax free? The answer is "YES".
The SNP will ALWAYS put Scotland's interests first.

There is every chance that the SNP will get over 40 MPs in the general election. That is a sizeable minority and no matter what party has the majority Labour or Tory they will at times need to the support of the SNP to govern.

Such an outcome allows Scotland to have a major say at Westminster for the first time in history. It’s a chance to end the revolving door of either a Tory or Labour government that we’ve seen for years with little benefit to Scotland

It was very clear in the referendum as to what the major Westminster party’s thought about Scotland. They ganged up together try and ensure that we wouldn’t become independent and tried every tactic they could such as the flawed vows a few days before the election. The referendum was the only time we’ve seen major interest in Scotland, for the rest of the time we’re largely ignored

But when it comes to having a say in major matters Scotland has very much been seen as a region. Further proof of this we can see in the demise of the Scottish Labour party with the outgoing leader Johann Lamont declaring that Scottish Labour was a mere branch office.

Tony Blair shifted Labour to the right with the advent of new Labour and since then the party has lost support of the left, witness the number of unions withdrawing support

The SNP offer policies that fill the gap left by Labour, wanting to care for the people of Scotland. Ironically they were once dubbed the tartan Tories but now they are very much tartan Labour albeit supporting old school Labour values

I very much hope that however many seats the SNP gain at Westminster they will be able to persuade either the Tory or Labour party to have serious 2nd thoughts about the likes of Trident. It’s renewal will see billions of pounds spent that we just don’t have

Don't miss out Tartan Tory 11:04. Alex has form and has worked with the Tories at Holyrood pre 2011. And despite all that's been said don't rule out some kind of post-election deal by the SNP to prop up the Tories. Yes, you've heard it on the Gurn from Nurn blog site first.

But 11:51, the only prospect of the SNP having any say in the government of the UK is if Labour is the largest party after the election. Every seat lost by Labour to the SNP increases the likelyhood of David Cameron being PM for another 5 years. What a dismal prospect. Prepare for much disappointment after May 7.

Were ok as we are! Carry on......

Oh, anon@12.19pm, you are very naive. Don't you think Danny and his LD mates have never done any deals with the Tories? This is politics we're talking here, of course there will be deals!

Labour promises are just that or do folk think that the SE of England will be happy transfer millions of pounds to Scotland

They want our vote so they can continue with life in Westminster, picking up fat salaries and fatter expenses

As a party they are finished in Scotland, for too long they've asked Scots to support them and have managed to get us so little in return

Ed Balls saying he wouldn't change anything in George Osborne's budget underlines Labour as Tories

We want change rather than the same old same old

11.51 With Russian planes over Cornwall and their submarines spotted in British Waters,Scotland could become an open back door, whatever the cost we need to defend our shores. Also mass unemployment is not going to help.

Even more reason to spend on conventional forces instead of £30? billion on Trident anon.

The anti-Tory vote is well and truly split in Scotland. Looks like another 5 years for DC, sadly.

' With Russian planes over Cornwall and their submarines spotted in British Waters,Scotland could become an open back door, whatever the cost we need to defend our shores. Also mass unemployment is not going to help'

If this is true then it looks as though Trident as a deterrent is a complete waste of money (as I thought).

I can think of much more worthwhile job creation projects than spending billions on Trident

Besides, we've been told by Westminster that Scotland is poor and impoverished so who's going to want to invade us?

Anonymous said...

I find it somewhat odd we make a fuss about trident. Looked at fiscally we put in 10% and the rUK the other 90% most of which is spent in Scotland supporting Scottish businesses and enterprise. We should be saying go trident surely?????

SNP don't represent the people of Scotland. They represent a socialist minority who wish to maintain a standard of living supported by the silent majority. At the moment that only works because of funding from the rest of the UK. Only when the Scottish Government (of whatever political persuasion) can prove that they have balanced their accounts and can run a surplus will it be the time to press for full independence.

@ Anon 9:02 pm

How do you work out that the SNP are a 'minority'

Could we see your figures please?

Anonymous said...

@Anon 8:01

Most of the billions spent on Trident goes to the US who we rent it from, although you do manage to make it sound as though it's remarkably cheap

Apart from cost the main danger of having Trident is a nuclear accident that are unfortunately more common than folk think. We're more likely to blow ourselves up than any imagined foe

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 09:13. The SNP are a minority because the majority of Scottish people vote for other parties. As for figures even the latest opinion polls show the SNP below 50%, therefore a minority.

Anonymous said...

How about this as a scenario? After the election David Cameron sidles up to Alex and poses this question. How about you supporting the Tories to keep us in power and we will agree to another independence referendum in April 2020? Would the SNP agree to this for that opportunity? I wonder.

Anonymous said...

Yes Anon @ 08:29 but there are some folk in Scotland who think that 45% is actually a majority.

Danny Alexander Secretary to the Treasury, joined the Tories, sold of the profitable Royal Mail cheaply, sold off the UK's profitable share of railways, agreed to £30 billion more cuts & has allowed chunks of the NHS to be sold off to private companies. All that whilst 1 in 4 children in his constituency are living in poverty & more than half the adults living in poverty are in work, working to be poor - YET the rich have doubled their wealth in the last five years. You reap what you sow Mr Alexander.

And we will vote in Scotland hopefully for change - we haven't abandoned Labour they abandoned us - they are self serving career politicians & I was a Labour voter. Ultimately the decision lies with a minority of swing voters in Southern England coupled with voter apathy there - it will not be the fault of voters here if we get Tories, the system is to blame too & that is why everyone should vote with their conscience.

“Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.” ― Mark Twain.

Danny is toast, rightly so, he and his liberal pals have proped up the tories and their austerity.

Only hope for Scotland is to vote SNP to protect us from both blue tories and the red tories (labour).

Vote for Scotland, vote SNP!

Angus McDonald

Oh dear 07:26 you may have to face a big disappointment in May when you find out that the SNP can't protect Scotland from the Blue Tories.

@ Anon 11:13

So much for 'oh dears' anon. Maybe 5 years is a long time for you to remember but in the last general election Scotland voted for Labour and the net result was one Tory MP in Scotland but a Tory Westminster government ruling us

Who knows what party will narrowly win this election, one thing's for sure Scotland will have the strongest ever voice it's ever had at Westminster thanks to the huge SNP vote.
