SNP blunder today says Liz

Liz is referring to the decision today by the SNP. An independent Scotland would remain part of Nato now. This observer can't say that it's the talk of the streets just now. People are mentioning Cllr Donnie Kerr's defection from the SNP to the Independents however. Although Donnie will sit as an independent independent. If this continues it won't be long before there will be three different lots of independents like there were in the final days of the last administration.

Massive blunder by Liz. By saying this she has shown her ignorance of world affairs and politics. Very disappointing....

What do you mean a 'blunder'? Will that affect the way you vote?

no to war said...

@Bob

It would be just as easy to say that your comment shows your 'ignorance of world affairs and politics' Bob

Liz's comment, stance and vote are just the opposite of disappointing, showing someone who is prepared to stick to their principles when it comes to the future of Scotland after Independence, and the place it will have with regard world peace

I would have thought that this was a question that could be left until after independence. If the Scottish people can be trusted to decide their own future in or out of the UK then surely membership of NATO is something else they could pop down to the ballot box for in an independent Scotland.
People can make their own minds up, sometimes they don't need politicians as much as the politicians think they do.

Interesting Graisg

So would you argue then that the way forward for Scotland is to move from reliance on a 'Representative' to more 'Direct' democracy?

Generally I would think so but people would get bored going down for a referendum every week - eg should we turn one in every two street lights off yes/no. I also think there should be more power in communities first. Look how Highland Council decided that Nairn should continue with 3 community councils instead of one.
We need a ballot in Nairn for that. Do you want a single community (town) council for Nairn?

Yes
No
Don't care

That would be Nice - if you can pardon the pun. In fact better than NICE, a democratically elected body to take the whole town forward.

From the BBC Scotland News

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-19993694

Amendment (C) to resolution

"As Nato continues to be a nuclear weapons-based alliance, conference resolves that the SNP position will continue to be that Scotland should not remain a member of Nato, but instead co-operate as part of the Partnership for Peace programme and be a full member of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union and the Organisation for security and co-operation in Europe."

Backed by more than 20 members including - Jamie Hepburn MSP; Jean Urquhart MSP; John Finnie MSP; Dave Thompson MSP; Gordon Macdonald MSP; Marco Biagi MSP; Bob Doris MSP and Sandra White MSP

How the voting went

The amendment to reject the motion (Amendment C) was defeated by 394 votes to 365 votes.

The amendment on a "remit back", (in other words to put off a decision on the issue) was defeated by 425 votes to 360 votes.

The motion to support Angus Robertson's Nato policy change was passed by 426 votes to 332 votes.

Is this the same Liz who asked the military for help with the Firhall Bridge? I'd like to see how a purely non-NATO aligned Scottish military force could afford such a luxury....

Our armed forces do a tremendous job and my lack of support for NATO is no criticism of our forces, but rather of the politicians like Tony Blair and George Bush who instruct their actions. Conference agree an annual defence and security budget of £2.5bn in an Independent Scotland to armed forces and annual increase of more that £500m on recent UK levels

SNP cann't get anything right, even their party political broadcast music.. Words "united we stand ..divided we fall" is that not the opposite of what they stand for?
