Nairn "The enthusiasm, the experience and the talent that is here..." A wee blether with Gemma Hill of the Nairn Economic Initiative

Today we had a chance to have a wee blether with Gemma Hill of the Nairn Economic Initiative.

Gemma will be circulating a draft document in the coming weeks, for consultation with the other groups in Nairn, inviting them to contribute, and agree on, collective long term aims and goals over the next 5-10 years, forming a collaborative "Nairn Vision". Each group will also be asked to add in their initiatives along side those of the NEI so all projects can benefit from being linked back to the overarching agreed Vision. Gemma expressed how much she was looking forward to working with all involved on achieving this for Nairn. Please contact her via gemmahill@me.com for any questions or input.

Great transport?! You'll only get to the 'monster, whisky or the west coast' if you have a car or very limited access if you use public transport and have infinite patience and a pocket full of money to pay for your tickets

Nice to hear someone being positive about the depth of talent and capability that we have in our town, because we do.

We've not had a lot of help over the last few years from the agencies who are supposed to help business and tourism so it's refreshing to see that there are some people in the town who prepared to get off their backsides and work towards increasing Nairn's profile and trying to encourage increased visitor numbers and investment in the town.

Where exactly does the NEI sit in relation to NICE, the BID, the Riverside Grass Cutting Company Escapade, the remaining community councils, the new Nairn Committee, not to mention the Peoples Front of Judea, the Judean Peoples Front and all the other worthy bodies that fill the pages of the Gurn. I'm afraid I'm confused.Very confused.

The NEI embraces the more positive projects being undertaken by those in the town who understand Newton's first law of business and stuff

That being : If you sit on your ar*e and do bugger all, then bugger all is highly likely to happen.

Inertia takes a bit of overcoming but , in the meanwhile, be grateful, it's something else for those that don't do to criticise.

Great to hear someone eloquently talking Nairn and its potential up instead of down.
Good luck to Gemma in progressing things.
Confused.com - I don't know where NEI "sits" at all. It seems to have got off its derriere and is trying to move Nairn forward.
Longer term - given that it is business and economic development focused, I would have thought it would become the Nairn BID. But I guess that will depend on whether the local business community buy into the concept of a BID. Some of our local businesses are only just getting by and I think it'll be tough for them to weigh up the costs and benefits of a BID.

Yes we need more economic activity and also perhaps we could adjust some of our existing behaviour and spend more of our money locally?

Yep. Sometimes we go to Curry's or BnQ - but when carmiles are factored in, Nairn High Street is where to spend.
