A 1908 Welcome

One of our regular readers "Doctor Grigor" tells us that he was out walking down Harbour Street this morning, he told the Gurn "I spotted this, its on the Al Raj restaurant, workmen were  replacing signage. As a kid,  I remember my mother taking me there for a meal when it was called “The Welcome Hall”

I think dr.grigor should be reinstated to the wide pavements of the high street, instead of being hidden away out of sight at viewfield, theres plenty room for him say, outside the courthouse, and whatever happened to the old red and white painted mine that once stood in high street?it was used to collect coins etc,
narook.

As a boy this was one of the places we went to and pass the time and be off the streets if my memory serves me right it was A Miss Gavin?? that run the hall at the time with all sorts of entertainment to keep us off the streets. That's when some one could do that with out all the rules and regulations about some one running that sort of place with out the fear of being accused of all sorts of things. Just let the kids in and enjoy them selves. That was tho good old days. SIXTY ODD YEARS AGO

I remember the old war mine, it did spend some time at the bus station for a while too. I wonder what did happen to it though ? No doubt scrapped ! But it would of made a nice wee ornamental piece for the harbour.

Was this known as the Salvation Hall long before the war?
