“A NICE Vision for Nairn” - The nice people are looking for a 1,000 new members

NICE have bounced back into life. The organisation announces on its website today:

"There have been various rumours of our demise, but the reality is that the Directors have been quietly following up on the decisions made at the last AGM. It has taken much more time than anticipated and we had to make sure that the changes to the NICE Articles were sound and, above all, legal. The new Articles will be presented to members for approval at a specially called EGM on the 18th Sept."

NICE is now a Community Development Trust with a right to buy. The organisation will be coming out into the open with their latest plans " A NICE vision for Nairn" on the 12th of October and they are aiming high. The message on their site continues: "The new Community Development Trust will require the involvement and participation of at least a 1000 new members and we invite you to join us."

You can find details of the meeting on the 12th and details of how to join the NICE folk here.

The Gurn predicts that the position of River Community Council vis a vis the Niceafarians will be crucial, can the NICE folk get River onside or will Tommy and his members keep a respectable distance and simply put forward their own ideas for the town centre? The Gurn would also respectfully suggest that if 1,000 members are wanted then NICE should publish the plans on the net and see what the people of Nairnshire think about them right now otherwise rumours could get out of hand about what NICE wish to do with properties in the town centre and perhaps beyond? What harm could it do to release information into the public domain now? It would confirm if NICE are on the right track or not wouldn't it?

If NICE are so nice why are they not looking for all Nairnites to join them rather than just 1000?

Elitism - I suspect because they are going to ask for a financial conbtribution as part of the "joining them fee/subscription". I seem to recal Mr Vine saying if 1000 people all gave £100 each, could the 2 be linked? Me wonders

Even if NICE are begging for money, why is their quest not for the whole of Nairn to join not just a select 1000?

"of at least a thousand" were the words I beleive"
Shame anyone tempted has to wait so long for the document to come out.

Perhaps they'll get around to the NICE document when the book fest is over!

I wonder if Doctor Grigor suffered the same amount of sledging in Victorian times, when he did his bit to generally improve the town.

We live in wonderful times where there always has to be a back story, innuendo , suspicion, general sniping and accusations of both elitism and inaction.

Tell you what folks, let's try something really revolutionary and wait to see the details, when the people giving the details are ready to give them.

Or has the town's media totally signed up to the great British model of not wanting to do anything and doing their best to ensure that no one else does anything either?

I'm willing to wait and see. Sound's interesting to me.I like the idea of 1000 folks who are interested in forming a town centre we could be proud of, or would you rather time and money be invested in trying to engage the 80% of the town that couldn't give a toss? :)

We've been waiting a long time for the NICE detail. Will this band of a 1000 be seeking future independence, there's a certain area of the town that seems to have effectively done this already!

QED 80%....QED indeed

So will whatever the 1000 buy be known as the 'not so common good' land?

I don't think NICE can yet have obtained the right to buy. They need at least 10% of the population to support their plans (about 850) to be able to apply to register an interest in some land. I'm with Spurtle - we need to hear more - but I'd like to see some really imaginative ideas that appeal to more than 1000 of our 8,500 inhabitants.
