Sunday in Viewfield

Above is a copy of the the programme of musical talent that will be appearing at the Jubilee Celebrations in Viewfield on Sunday. The event was discussed at the Suburban CC meeting on Tuesday night and Dick Youngson who has been working with the museum's Yvonne Cotter, gave an account of what is planned for the day. Unfortunately for the organisers the Community Centre will not be available in the event of wet weather but the Sports Club and the Bowling Club will be open, the Musuem is also offering free entry.
Fund-raising for the event has raised £600 but expenses so far have reached £939, with the hire of the stage and payment for musicians being the main expenditure (jazz club £240). There will be a raffle on the day to raise further funds.
The organisers will no doubt be keeping an anxious eye on the weather forecast as we near the Jubilee weekend.
UPDATE: John Urquhart tells us that there has been a programme change: "Re the timetable shown on the Gurn site. The Timetable is an old one and The Howlin Gaels and Accidentals have swapped times at the Gaels request."

Which band are playing the national anthem then, and I bet they don't play/sing this verse, wouldn't want to upset the Scots would one?

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

Personally I hope it rains hard all day

Brilliant, deliberate and unnecessary budgetary overspend which they hope to wipe out by setting new taxes. I thought it was just in Westminster we suffered such economic clowns

God save us all

And I would 2nd the call for rain, but only over Viewfield

Oh for goodness sake, you should be proud to see local talent prepared to participate in such an even and support them - Flower of Scotland... you are more like a prickly thistle, if it does rain hopefully it will all fall on you.

Seems our local talent is doing this for free whilst the jazz band from Forres gets paid nearly half the budget. I would rather see our locals getting paid rather than being exploited, and why should we be proud to see them do this for nothing or very little? Poor organisation if you ask me

Bring on the rain and hope Marshal Wade stays at home

This event has our town and I'm sure many others divided over similar events. I would have thought that the least the organisers could have done is to keep it low key and strictly within budget.

For those wanting to publicly celebrate the event I would have thought a mass picnic and maybe a couple of speeches would have been suffice

Many of us including myself believe this is blatant waste of public monies. Not that I want it but would a Republican rally also be offered similar public funds, I doubt it

@Prickly thistle - The pipe band will be free but a donation will be made. As to payments to other local performers, nothing was made clear on that although Dick Youngson said, "we have to pay for the bands"

As mentioned in the article a figure of £240 for the jazz band was made public however. It might be worth adding that it was stated that the jazz band would play beyond four o'clock.
This observer also understands that the Highland Council will be paid a fee for the use and installation of the stage - another big chunk of the budget gone on that it seems.

public floggings of local vandals would certainly bring in lots of cash if public were allowed to thrash the louts

Keir Hardie remarks on diamond jubilee : -
'Even under a representative system of government it is possible to paralyse a nation by maintaining the fiction that a reigning family is a necessity of good government. Now, one of two things must be – either the British people are fit to govern themselves or they are not. If they are, an hereditary ruler who in legislation has more power than the whole nation is an insult. Despotism and monarchy are compatible; democracy and monarchy are an unthinkable connection.
If we are for the Queen we are not for her subjects. The throne represents the power of caste – class rule. Round the throne gather the unwholesome parasites who cling to the system which lends itself to their disordered condition. The toady who crawls through the mire of self-abasement to enable him to bask in the smile of royalty is the victim of a diseased organism. No healthy, well-developed people could for one moment tolerate an institution which belongs to the childhood of the race, and which in these latter days is the centre, if not the source, of the corrupting influences which constitute Society.
The great mind, the strong heart, the detestation of wrong, the love of truth whether in cot or palace will always command my respect. But to worship an empty form, to make pretence to believe a gilded mediocrity indispensable to the wellbeing of the nation – where is the man who will so far forget what is due to his manhood?
In this country loyalty to the Queen is used by the profit-mongers to blind the eyes of the people. We can have but one feeling in the matter – contempt for thrones and for all who bolster them up.'

Aye nothing's perfect...and the alternative would be President Blair, or maybe even President Clegg, President Kinnock or any other tosser you might like to name? Maybe somebody like Gaddafi or Assad might end up head of state?

Hmmm... nah, not a very convincing prospect. Have to say i agree with HRA (again) on this one. It is after all a load of old bollocks. Seriously though, unfortunately or fortunately, we do tend to shy away from true 'politics' as this suggests integrity, intelligence and tenacity. HRA has a point, to some degree we have been conditioned to not question anything. Taking the piss out of ourselves is a laudable quality, but stuff is going - has always been going on - and sticking ones head up one's arse just isn't an option anymore, is it? Pxx

@Good riddance - could you contact the Gurn to prove you are genuinely a resident backing onto Viewfield, if we were to publish your comments they would have to be backed up by evidence perhaps.

There now follows a comment from Good riddance. This comment has been edited - two paragraphs removed.

"So, potentially a nice quiet afternoon in my garden but no, what passed for culture was piped out of a PA system and totally spoilt my afternoon. I won't comment on the standard of singing but caterwauling comes to mind

Hopefully all over now and the certain people can put their bunting away for a very long time."
