Bollards to them!

Watch out for the new bollard just by the Nairnshire Telegraph offices on Leopold Street. This is a spot where drivers often decide to use some of the pavement to enable them to progress further along the street. One of our regular unreliable sources told us that another one had been put in by the Blockbusters shop but it didn't last too long before something knocked it out of the ground.

This is another example of the stupid - but sadly typical - response of the Highland Council to traffic difficulties. The approach seems to be "don't figure out the source of the problem, just add another obstacle!"

Look at the past examples. Congestion under the railway bridge? Add a chicane, pavement bulges and give-way signs to obstruct the traffic.

Problem at the bottom of the Brae? Extend the pavement, add railings, narrow the road, confuse the visiting driver even more.

Traffic jams on the A96 through Nairn? Add a few more traffic lights, make the queues worse.

Can't figure out how to get into the new town centre car-parking on the demolished church site? Oh well, block the layby, add a few more bollards and No Entry signs, that should sort it.

Hazardous near misses with timber-trucks on Balblair or Cawdor Road? You ain't seen nothing yet - just put a few hundred houses in the field nearby and then watch the real fun start!

And on Leopold Street? Two lanes are squeezed down to one because there are parking bays in front of Macleans and the pet-shop, so vehicles sometimes run on to the pavement by the Nairnie. Simple solution: remove a couple of those parking bays (after all, there is now extra parking on the old church site). But no, that would be too sensible - so they just put in a few more obstructions on the opposite pavement instead.

Welcome to Nairn - there isn't a local problem which the Council can't make worse!

Street walker, fire you comments to Liz Macdonald at Council in Inverness by her contact on council site. She is interested in getting comments to people in the know.

The bollard outside Tradeway is a replacement for the 1 that was knocked down last winter. The bollard outside blockbuster was knocked over within a fortnight of being installed!!!

Its a disgrace of a town for traffic & congestion i have never seen anything like it to be honest. Why put bollards on the roadside. i heard one was knocked down last week put the council just left it so no wonder it got knocked out the ground as the driver i am sure couldn't see it.

Maybe some bigger bollards are in order? Or many more of them? Yes, bollards everywhere, as many and as quickly as possible. P xx
