Keep your distance from the birds in cold weather

Ayeright has spotted a warning from the RSPB:
The RSPB is asking for the first time in many years for us to be cautious when near to wetland birds, the cold weather makes them very vulnerable, and an approaching human or dog can make them take flight using up valuable energy in this cold weather: Freeze threatens wetland birds.

A good posting Gurn staff...
It's an old chestnut but please don't feed the water birds with white bread! It fills them up but gives them very few nutrients and may stop them eating food that is good for them (This advice applies to humans as well :)

On two occasions now myself and a friend have been lectured whilst feeding the ducks and swans down the river(brown bread). I have done this since a child in Nairn, one would expect it to be a peaceful experience and not to expect an character to instruct you not to feed the seagulls (which I do try and avoid) because they eat the duck chicks .To me this excessive instruction is OTT!.

Please note Gurnites that we've had a breadcrumb brigade rammy in here before so keep it tame. The Gurnmeister will soon get scunnered and turn off the comments if it kicks off again.

my duck vrs seagull feeding saga continues. now i find myself being targeted with a flier whilst feeding the ducks , on one side do's and dont's of feeding the birds and on the other a pretty graphic pic of a seagull eating a baby duck chic . What a great way of encouraging folk to feed the birds! if this kind of behaviour carry's on no-one will want to feed the birds at all, then what will they do !!!

Doc,

Sorry to hear you have now become the target for waste paper

Maybe you could use a certain position of influence to suggest that the Cinema of Dreams review the film Duck Soup? This would surely revenge the attacks by Count Duckula?

Alternatively, carry a picture of a roast duck dinner to hand to the paper picket?
